2019 MEGA SPILEO MAVRO KALAVRITINO – MERLOT (alcohol 12.5%) PGI Achaia Red dry wine, PGI Achaia VARIETAL BLEND 50% Mavro Kalavritino & 50% Merlot A dark red colour wine with lively blue hues. Complex aroma of black fruits, dried fruits and cacao on vanilla background. Butterscotch and cherries. Gentle, light to medium bodied and soft and integrated tannins on mouth balanced with delicate acidity that keeps lingering on.
When you sip this wine, you are tasting a blend of Merlot with a very rare indigenous mountainous Greek grape, the “Mavro Kalavritino” (it means Black from Kalavrita). Did you know? In the whole world there are less than 4 hectares of black Kalavritino, located only in this province of northern Peloponnese. Its name “Kalavritino” comes from the heroic village of Kalavrita at Mount Helmos, where the Greek revolt against the Ottoman empire begun. It is grown in high altitude, even above 1,000m, in an area known for skiing. At these elevations and with the help of breezes drifting in from the Gulf of Corinth, the searing heat of the Mediterranean sun is somewhat mitigated and freshness can be retained in the grapes, and consequently the wines. The climatic conditions also work as natural pesticide, making redundant the use of chemical products. You can tell it after a few glasses, when you are happy and with no headache.
